inca kola and saltenas
for the most part, i was raised in houston. my parents moved here when i was 3 and my sister 1. we didnt join our parents for another 5 or 6 years. so doing the math, ive been here for almost 20 years.
and even to this day, if i dont know something that is popular in american culture, i use the excuse that i am a foreigner.
that being said, i also take foods that i grew up with for granted.
have you ever drank an inca kola?
have you ever ate a saltena?
no?!!!!
well then, you my friend have not lived.
i was surprised to find inca cola at hubbel and hudson (in the woodlands). and as for saltenas ... a saltena is a spiced beef or chicken stew encased in a pastry made from lard and annatto. my grandma makes them on the weekends by orders from other bolivians in the city. want an order?

ummm ill have 22 please
I've had Inka Cola before, I think. And found it very sweet. How does a saltena compare to say, a Jamaican meat pie or a Colombian empanada?
inka cola is very sweet. its flavors come close to a big red, but not as sweet.
i have never had a jamaican meat pie or colombian empanada. so i do not know how to compare it to them. but i do want to try both. any places in houston?
Well, at least for the empanada, Marine's empanadas is pretty much a Houston institution (although I go there for the pan de bono). Jamaican meat pies I am still out sampling - most places get factory made pies, and reheat.
i want to order 2 dz to be shipped to my boat please!!! i llllllooovvvveee them! and your grandma!!!
I love Inka Kola, and I love saltenas. (Spent a month in La Paz studying Spanish. I miss saltenas and llama steaks.)
Any way you can post a recipe for saltenas with some pointers on the dough? I can only find 2-3 on the web, and none of them are great. (The dough on the two I've tried seems more like the fluffier dough of empanadas than the more pizza-like dough for saltenas.)
PS Your food is beautiful.
Can I order saltenas please. Please let me know how I can order.
Thank you
